Born in 1932 in Okayama, Japan, director Nagisa Ôshima won many awards. His films were very diverse in genre, many of which were documentaries, war films, psychological films, and especially prominent were 18+ films with a work that was considered a classic of Japanese porn films, which was Kingdom of Desire released in 1976. When Japanese adult films at this time were still quite “light”, without many completely nude scenes as well as bold “relationship” scenes, Nagisa was like a pioneer who breathed new life into them with new ideas in both plot and filming. From there, In The Realm Of The Senses became his most famous and In the Realm of the Senses is one.
The content of In the Realm of the Senses is based on a true event that took place in 1936. Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) is a prostitute who turns into a waitress who has a hot love affair with her boss Kichizo Ishida (Tatsuya Fuji). The couple will have a marathon in love that can last for many days. In the end, Sada tortured Kichizo to death, cutting off his penis, because she said she could not stand it when he always had hot relationships with other women, even doing it right in front of her. She then put his penis in her bag before running away.
Right from the production process, Kingdom of Lust encountered many difficulties when the filmmakers from Japan had to ask a French company to be the producer to be allowed to film in the land of the rising sun. The sensitive scenes could not even be handled in Japan, so the film had to be post-produced in France. When it was released, many parts were cut and blurred. When it came to the US, the worst thing was that the film was banned from the New York Film Festival, but then fortunately it was shown in theaters. The film encountered similar difficulties in Germany, England, Canada, Portugal, etc. However, surprisingly, in Portugal, the film was even shown on the national television station RTP, which caused even more public opinion to stir.
